Brothers and Sisters,
All across our country, and even here in the City of Walnut, we see the anguish and pain and especially the moral outrage caused by racism and inequality. We have seen the results of those who would capitalize on lawful, righteous protest to incite riots, looting, arson, and even more violence. What happened to George Floyd was a horrible tragedy for his family, his community, and for our nation as a whole. However, we cannot allow our outrage at his tragic death beget even more injustice and violence.
We should remember that “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that. Hate multiplies hate, violence multiplies violence, and toughness multiplies toughness in a descending spiral of destruction.” These words from the late Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. should inspire us all to stand together, to act together, and to end the injustices that divide us. We must work together to ensure equality and justice without engaging in violence.
As classified professionals, we serve a critical role in Mt. San Antonio College’s mission to prepare our students to “become productive members of a diverse, sustainable, global society.” Our mission in CSEA is to improve lives. Our union is built on the principle that we are stronger when we are together. Let us join with our faculty colleagues, our college administrators, our classified colleagues, our communities, and especially our students and show we are committed to ending violence and injustice.
Let us join together as brothers and sisters to demonstrate our commitment to embrace equality and condemn violence.
